My letter to the PM: Ignore the Press!

Dear Prime Minister,

I am writing to you today not with criticism, but with a fervent hope for the success of your government. Like many, I believe in the potential for a fairer, more prosperous Britain and want to see this administration succeed in its monumental task.

However, there is a growing concern that I feel must be voiced. The recent media landscape, dominated by an obsession with Reform UK, seems designed to create a distorted reality. It is my strong belief that this right-wing dominated media ecosystem will never give this government a fair shake. Their focus is on creating drama, not on fostering understanding; they thrive on conflict and simplistic narratives, entirely devoid of the nuance that responsible governance requires.

This leads to my central plea: your government must not dance to Reform’s tune, nor be swayed by the short-termism of daily press analysis.

Governing by reaction and poll-chasing is a dangerous path. As you know better than most, polls do not decide elections; events, and more importantly, how a government manages them, do. Strength is demonstrated through steady, competent management and a clear, unwavering vision.

This is where your communication must become more assertive. The public understands the profound challenges inherited from the previous administration. What they need from you is a crystal-clear, repetitive narrative built on a simple, powerful structure: “This is the damage we inherited. This is our definitive plan to fix it. This is why it will take time and require resilience.”

Currently, the perception is that policy definition is reactive rather than proactive. Defining the agenda—on the economy, the NHS, and public services—on your own terms is crucial. Stop pandering to a press bubble that is often actively hostile to your goals. Your focus should be on speaking directly to the country, over the heads of the media, with a message of gritty, determined realism.

The mandate you received was for change, not for perfection on day one. The British people can tolerate pain if it is part of an  honest and credible plan. They have far less tolerance for a government that appears to be blown off course by every headline and editorial.

Please, lead with the courage of your convictions. Define your mission, stick to your plan, and trust that the electorate will respect resolve and clarity more than they will reward a futile attempt to appease critics who cannot be appeased.

Yours respectfully,

Richard J Hannah
